Stars, They're Just Like Us!

They Craft!

Saturday afternoon, I was frantically running around trying to get some things accomplished before watching UT in the Big 12 Championship Game (ps. Hunter Lawrence, I love you). I knew I wanted to work on some crafty wedding projects while the game was on, so I stopped by Michael's on my was over to Mark's house. Once inside, I grabbed a basket and started my lap around the store.

This weekend my BFF/college roomie is having her Bachelorette party in Austin. Five bridesmaids (myself included) are hosting the party, which will have a Tacky Christmas meets Lingerie Shower meets Night on the Town theme. I am in charge of games and decorations, so I hit up Michaels with a few items in mind, but was also looking for anything and everything that jumped out at me. I literally walked through the entire store, aisle by aisle, waiting for inspiration to hit. After about an hour (what happens to time when you're in Michaels, seriously?!) I headed to the check out line. I was digging through my coupon bag in my purse (yes, I carry a gallon size Ziploc bag full of coupons at all time. Laugh if you must, but I NEVER pay full price!) when the lady behind me (who must have seen all the clipped coupon goodness) asks if I have any spare ones she can use. I strike up a conversation with her as I rummage through my pile a little more to find her one and she tells me I'll never guess who she just saw in the yarn aisle.

"Who?" (I'm thinking hmm.. maybe it was a Dallas athlete? But in the yarn aisle? Maybe not.)

"Uma Thurman."

"Wha? Uma? Uma Thurman's in this Michael's right now?!" (Frantically scanning around the store to catch a glimpse)

"Yeah. She was buying yarn. She said her friend is teaching her to knit."

"Does she live in Dallas? I can't believe this!" (Still searching everywhere for her. I seriously walked up and down every aisle in the place. Some even twice. How could I have missed here?!)

"I don't think so. She must be visiting someone."

Sigh. It's my turn to pay and I've missed Uma. But be it known that Uma shops at my Michaels. Or at least she did this weekend. If you happen to see her knitting in the pages of US Weekly next week, know that you heard it here first. Uma crafts with the rest of us. Stars. They really are just like us!

Wanted: Free Wi Fi

I have a confession to make. For the past nine months I have been "borrowing" other people's wireless internet. When I got my new laptop last year, it was immediately super stealth at detecting wireless connections from anywhere and everywhere. Like as soon as I took it out of the box and turned it on, it was all "hello, I've found you an internet connection!" So earlier this year when I made the switch over to the iPhone and I was going to be paying an extra $30 a month on the cell phone bill, I wanted to find a place to cut that expense out. My choices were to either quit the gym or drop my internet provider. Well this was back in the day when I was actually still working out and I wasn't even using my internet anymore, yet continued to pay it on "good faith" every month. So I officially quite Time Warner and have been living blissfully internet bill free ever since. I had three neighbors who didn't have passwords on their wireless access, so I jumped around from the three of them and was home free, quite literally. Today, only one of those open networks is still available and it's been pretty spotty here lately and this entire weekend its been zilch. No connection.

I have been oh so lonely.

So I packed up my computer and all its cords this morning and sought out some free Wi Fi. Library? Boring. Starbucks? I don't even like coffee! Corner Bakery? Bingo! I snagged a back corner booth, ordered an oatmeal cookie and have access to not only the free Wi Fi, but an endless supply of Diet Coke refills! I may never leave here. Well, at least not until my battery runs out because I can't seem to find an outlet anywhere around here. In the meantime, I'm (finally) downloading the iPhone update (picture text messages! about time!) and getting my fill of wedding blogs that I have been so deprived of all weekend. And looking hardcore at wedding dresses because we are going to look on Wednesday! Me = stoked.

Grumpy Old Men

Today as I was leaving the gym, I needed to stock up on allergy medicine and opted to swing by Walgreens, rather than fight the traffic at Wal-Mart.  I zipped into the small parking lot and saw that almost all the spots were filled, except for one right in front.  However, an ugly maroon pick-up truck had parked way over the line, leaving a very slim space in which to park.  Normally, I would have circled around the back and skipped this space, but I was in a hurry today and decided to squeeze my way in.  I used to live at The Villas at Katy Trail, which has the world's smallest spaces, so I was a pro at parking in small spots.

I get my car parked, open my door a fraction and let is lightly tap the pick-up truck.  Then I do the crazy dance of trying to sideways squeeze my way out of my car, sucking my tummy in, while I curse the driver of the maroon pick-up under my breath.  Just as I am finagling my way out, I hear a raspy voice shout, "thanks for hitting my car!"  I look up and there is the Grumpy Old Man glaring at me as he walks across the parking lot.  I resist the urge to roll my eyes and say curtly, "Sorry.  You parked kind of close."  Grumpy Old Man then starts rambling off about his new paint job.  I look at his truck that must be at least ten years old and isn't shiny or gleaming and looks nothing like it was recently painted and opt to completely ignore him as he continues on with his rant.  I walk right into the store, avoiding eye contact and get into the Walgreens.  It then occurs to me that GOM is probably keying my car right now, but oh well.

Some people.  Humph.

Margaritaville

Turns out Jimmy Buffet was so. much. fun.  We got to the venue a little after noon and spent the next seven hours tailgating at this RV.  Mark's friend from college drove it down and let us all partake in burgers and beer all afternoon.

You meet all kinds of interesting people at a Jimmy Buffet tailgate.  Grown men and women dressed in complete pirate costumes.  Drunk college boys dressed as parrots.  Girls wearing coconut bras.  You also feel very skinny when you see these girls in their coconut bras, if you know what I mean.  The RV next to us had made 3,000 jello shots for the party.  They drove around in a golf cart decorated like a shark and threw them out at people.

The weather was perfect, so we climbed on top of the RV to work on our tans.

Later, a man dressed as a viking came over with a drink mix he had made.  By this time, we were not scared of vikings or their drinks, so we helped ourself to a shot (or two).

At one point, we realized the Hawaiian mural on our RV was the perfect picture backdrop, circa Prom 2001, so we started taking some posed pictures in front of it.  We even did a "Charlie's Angels" pose.  I think it was the viking's idea.

We has so much fun tailgating all day, that by the time the concert began, I was HUNG OVER.  It was the stage of a hangover that you are usually asleep by, and it wasn't fun to be awake for it.  So I did as best as I could during the show. We had great seats on the floor, right by a bar that sold those margaritas that come in the tall skinny glasses.  I didn't take any pictures during this time, since I felt like crap, but it was still a lot of fun.  The best part?  We're doing it again next weekend, for the Kenny Chesney concert!
